The Ozark mountains in the American states of Arkansas and Missouri are home to a number of solitary individuals who have chosen to escape society. Matthew Genitempo (b. 1983, United States) documented these voluntary outcasts amid the isolation of dark woods. Lacking luxury and modern technology, they lead rough lives of improvisation and survival.

Inspired by the life and work of American poet Frank Stanford (1948-1978), Genitempo himself became fascinated with the idea of running away and living off-grid. In his photo book, Jasper (2018), alongside portraits of these rugged men, he shows their living conditions in beautiful yet harsh natural surroundings.
